All’età di quattro anni ha iniziato a studiare danza classica in Italia, per poi proseguire gli studi presso la scuola di Marika Besobrasova a Monte Carlo. È stata scelta da Roland Petit per interpretare il ruolo di “Aurora bambina” nella sua versione de La bella addormentata. Ha continuato la sua formazione al Centre de Danse Rosella Hightower di Cannes (1991) e successivamente alla Scuola di Danza dell’Opéra di Parigi (1992). Nel 1996 è entrata a far parte del Balletto dell’Opéra di Parigi. È diventata coryphée nel 1999 e sujet nel 2000, interpretando poi ruoli da solista nei balletti di Rudolf Nureyev (Don Chisciotte, La bella addormentata, Cenerentola, La Bayadère, Raymonda, Lo Schiaccianoci), Martha Graham (Temptations of the Moon), Pierre Lacotte (La Sylphide), Roland Petit (Clavigo e Le Jeune Homme et la Mort) e George Balanchine (Emeralds). Aveva solo ventun anni quando, nel 2001, è stata nominata première danseuse. Da quel momento ha ampliato considerevolmente il suo repertorio interpretando le creazioni dei più grandi maestri della coreografia, come Roland Petit, Pina Bausch, William Forsythe, John Neumeier, Jiří Kylián, Jerome Robbins, Maurice Béjart e Angelin Preljocaj. Ha ricevuto numerosi premi tra cui il Prix Danse Europe (1990), il Prix du Cercle Carpeaux per la stagione 1998-99, il Premio Positano, il Premio del Pubblico assegnato da AROP nel 2000, il Premio Internazionale Gino Tani nel 2001 e il Premio Barocco nel 2007. Nel 2008 è stata insignita del titolo di Siciliana dell’Anno dal Presidente della Regione Sicilia e ha vinto il Premio Danza&Danza come miglior interprete dell’anno. Dal 2009 al 2011 ha lavorato come consulente artistica per il Teatro Petruzzelli di Bari. È stata diretta da Maurizio Scaparro nello spettacolo Polvere di Baghdad, in cui recita e danza. Lo spettacolo ha chiuso la Biennale Teatro di Venezia. Nel novembre 2009, Rizzoli ha pubblicato la sua autobiografia. Ha danzato in occasione del Concerto di Capodanno a Vienna, evento trasmesso in tutto il mondo, indossando costumi creati appositamente per lei da Valentino. Ha collaborato con importanti nomi della moda, tra cui Valentino, Maria Grazia Chiuri e Laura Biagiotti. Nel giugno 2010, con una lettera ufficiale del Presidente francese Nicolas Sarkozy, è stata nominata Chevalier dans l’Ordre National du Mérite per i suoi meriti artistici all’Opéra di Parigi. Il 27 marzo 2013, dopo aver interpretato Carmen di Roland Petit, è stata nominata étoile: è stata la prima italiana a ricevere questo titolo all’Opéra di Parigi. È regolarmente invitata a danzare nei più importanti teatri del mondo. Nel 2018, il Ministro della Cultura francese Françoise Nyssen l’ha nominata Officier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres; nel 2021 ha ricevuto anche il titolo di Commandeur de l’Ordre. Nel 2022, l’assessore alla cultura Gotor, a nome del sindaco di Roma Roberto Gualtieri, le ha consegnato la medaglia per la partecipazione a Capodarte. Nell’aprile 2015 è stata nominata Direttrice del Corpo di Ballo del Teatro dell’Opera di Roma, e nell’agosto 2022 anche della Scuola di Danza. Nel giugno 2021 ha dato il suo addio alle scene all’Opéra di Parigi. Nel marzo 2023, il Ministro della Cultura italiano Gennaro Sangiuliano l’ha nominata Presidente del Consiglio Superiore dello Spettacolo.

 

At the age of four she began studying ballet in Italy, then attended Marika Besobrasova’s school in Monte Carlo. She was chosen by Roland Petit to be “Aurora bambina” in his adaptation of Sleeping beauty, she continued her training at the Rosella Hightower Dance Centre in Cannes (1991) and then at the Dance School of the Paris Opera (1992). She was cast in the Paris Opera Ballet in 1996. She became coryphée in 1999 and sujet in 2000, and eventually she danced as soloist in the ballet of Rudolf Nureyev (Don Quixote, Sleeping Beauty, Cinderella, La Bayadère, Raymonda, The Nutcracker), Martha Graham (Temptations of the Moon), Pierre Lacotte (La Sylphide), Roland Petit (Clavigo and Le Jeune Homme et la Mort) and George Balanchine (Emeralds). She was only twenty-one years old when she was appointed première danseuse in 2001. From that moment on, she considerably enhanced her repertoire by interpreting the creative works of the greatest masters of choreography such as Roland Petit, Pina Bausch, William Forsythe, John Neumeier, Jiři Kylián, Jerome Robbins, Maurice Béjart and Angelin Preljocaj. She received the Prix Danse Europe (1990), the Prix du Cercle Carpeaux for the 1998-99 season, the Positano Prize, the Audience Prize awarded by AROP in 2000, the Gino Tani International Prize in 2001 and the Barocco Prize in 2007. In 2008 she was awarded the title of Sicilian of the Year by the President of Sicily and won the Danza&Danza Award as the best performer of the year. From 2009 to 2011 she worked as an artistic consultant at the Teatro Petruzzelli of Bari. She was directed by Maurizio Scaparro in the play Polvere di Baghdad, where she acts and dances. This play was the closing event on the occasion of the Biennale Teatro in Venice. In November 2009 Rizzoli published her autobiography. She danced on the occasion of the New Year’s Concert in Vienna, an event which is usually broadcast worldwide, with costumes designed especially for her by Valentino. She has collaborated with big names in fashion, including Valentino, Maria Grazia Chiuri and Laura Biagiotti. In June 2010, with an official letter from the French President Nicolas Sarkozy, she was nominated Chevalier dans l’Ordre National du Mérite for her artistic achievements at the Paris Opera. On March 27, 2013, after having danced Carmen by Roland Petit, she was appointed étoile, she was the first Italian to be awarded this title at the Paris Opera. She is regularly invited to dance worldwide. In 2018, French Culture Minister Nyssen appointed her Officier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres. In 2021, she is awarded the position of Commandeur de l’Ordre. The councillor for culture Gotor, on behalf of the mayor of Rome Gualtieri, presents her with the medal for participation in Capodarte 2022.
