Nata a Varsavia nel 1979, figlia di un generale dell’aeronautica militare polacca, Kasia Smutniak cresce a contatto con il mondo dell’aviazione, eredita dal padre la passione per il volo e consegue il brevetto da pilota a soli 16 anni. Dai primi anni 2000 intraprende la carriera di attrice, recitando in più di 40 progetti tra cinema e serie TV. Nel 2008 ha ricevuto il suo primo premio, il Globo D'Oro come migliore attrice esordiente dell'anno per il film "Nelle tue Mani" di Peter Del Monte, film con cui ha vinto anche il suo primo Nastro D'Argento. Lavora con diversi registi italiani e internazionali e ha recitato in numerosi film tra cui “Caos Calmo” di Antonello Grimaldi con Nanni Moretti (2008), "La Passione" di Carlo Mazzacurati (2009), "From Paris with Love"; di Pierre Morel (2010), "Meraviglioso Boccaccio" di Paolo e Vittorio Taviani (2015), "Dolce Fine Giornata" di Jacek Borcuch (2019) e "Il Colibrì" di Francesca Archibugi (2022). È tra i protagonisti del pluripremiato film "Perfetti Sconosciuti", che detiene il record di film con più remake nella storia del cinema. È protagonista della serie Sky "Devils" di Nick Hurran (2020) con Patrick Dempsey e Alessandro Borghi e interpreta il ruolo principale di Livia Drusilla nella serie Sky "Domina" diretta da Claire McCarthy. Nel 2014 ha vinto il Nastro d'Argento come miglior attrice protagonista grazie alla sua interpretazione in "Allacciate le Cinture" di Ferzan Özpetek e nel 2018 ha vinto il Nastro D’Argento come miglior attrice non protagonista per "Loro 1" e "Loro 2" del regista premio Oscar Paolo Sorrentino. Nel 2023 debutta alla regia con il docufilm “MUR”. Nel 2024 torna a lavorare con Ferzan Özpetek nel suo film “Diamanti”. Nel 2011 fonda la Pietro Taricone Onlus e costruisce la Solar Ghami School nel Mustang, in Nepal, una scuola innovativa costruita nel pieno rispetto dell’architettura Mustangi che mira a preservare la millenaria cultura tibetana.

In the early 2000s, she embarked on a career as an actress, appearing in more than 40 films and TV series. In 2023, she made her directorial debut with the documentary film “MUR.” In 2024, she returned to work with Ferzan Özpetek on his film “Diamanti.” In 2011, she founded the Pietro Taricone Onlus and built the Solar Ghami School in Mustang, Nepal, an innovative school built in full respect of Mustang architecture that aims to preserve the millennial Tibetan culture.
