Melitta Baumeister is a German fashion designer based in New York. After getting a tailoring education and a BA in fashion design in Germany, Melitta continued her master’s studies in Fashion Design and Society at Parsons School for Design in New York. Baumeister’s debut collection, one year after graduation, was the winner of VFiles Made Fashion 2, a fashion show during NYFW in February 2014 for autumn/winter 2014. Dover Street Market New York, London, and Ginza were the first retail stores to stock Baumeister’s first season.
Baumeister later displayed her SS15 collection as an independent showroom during Paris Fashion Week, and created an installation in Dover Street Market London as part of the Frieze Art Fair. Ai Wei Wei also transformed one of Baumeister’s pieces for V magazine into a piece of art, and selected Melitta Baumeister pieces were part of “Beauty,” the 2016 Cooper Hewitt Design Triennial. Baumeister was also shortlisted for the LVMH Prize 2016. In 2018, Baumeister opened her first shop-in-shop at DSMLA, and another at DSMNY in 2019. Baumeister was also selected for the exhibition "Femmes Fatales: Strong Women In Fashion," at Gemeentemuseum Den Haag + Modemuseum Hasselt, in 2019. Baumeister opened shop-in-shop spaces at Dover Street Market New York, Los Angeles, and Ginza in 2021.
